A retail sales merchandiser is employed by the product manufacturer and not by a retail store owner. It is the responsibility of a sales representative to coordinate and check with the sales of the manufacturer's goods at various retail counters and centers. The main aim of a sales merchandiser is to help and provide inputs to maximize the sales of products. Their main aim is to promote the product for the profit of the manufacturer and the retailer.

Educational Qualification and Traits Required
  • In this competitive world a graduation degree is a must for any respectable job and also to negotiate a good salary with the employer. A graduation degree in marketing is usually preferred for this job but a high school diploma is also acceptable in this profession.
  • Computer proficiency is a must like any other field, it is important that the candidate know certain software like Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel as they need to maintain an inventory of the product and also its sales record and volume.
  • The retail representative should have a very pleasing personality, as appearance is the foremost trait in the retail business.
  • A past experience in customer relationship or with handling clients is always an added advantage.
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills help in dealing with various vendors and customers, etc.
Responsibilities in a Retail Sales Job
  • They have to ensure proper maintenance and record of stock.
  • They need to ensure that the goods are displayed well in the store so that it attracts attention of the customer. This includes, the shelf space, displaying area and stocking.
  • One should also rotate the setting and display of the products to avoid monotony.
  • The audits should be performed regularly, and resolve issues and disputes which may arise after audit.
  • They execute various promotional campaigns created by the manufacturer to increase the sales of the product.
  • They have the responsibility to generate enthusiasm and awareness about the product prior to its launch.
  • They need to engage in physical activities of showing the goods and handling it hence they, need to be meticulous in their work.
  • They have to monitor and record sales, check inventory and in-store promotional ventures of the product.
  • They should be able to work independently and multi task work.
  • The sales merchandiser needs to educate the retail store employees about their products. Only if the product is appreciated by the employees will they be able to recommend it to customers.
  • They need to maintain a good rapport and efficient communication with the store employees.
Income and Benefits



Most of the retail sales merchandisers work part time and their average hourly wages are around $12-$15. The ones who work full time get paid up to $30,000 annually along with bonus and commission. Also depending on the nature of work and the company he/she works for they may also get a car and car allowance to perform their duty.
