If you love jewelry and you like the idea of being the person to determine whether or not something is truly valuable then you might find interest in becoming a jewelry appraiser. Some people might think that being a jewelry appraiser is no different than working in any retail job, but it is. You really have to be skilled and know what you are doing. Working retail sales jobs is something that you can learn within a matter of a couple of days. Working in the appraisal field will take longer to be trained.

The first thing you will want to do is to register for a gemologist program that will provide you with the chance to become certified. These courses are designed to help you identify common and uncommon gemstones. In addition, you will have the chance to learn about the various ways the market affects the stones values, along with the market value of precious metals.

After all of that, you will need to update your resume to show that you have received your certification for jewelry appraisal. You will want to make sure that you are highlighting the particular areas of study that you have gone through so that your potential employers out there will know just what your skills are.

Now you will want to start looking for a retail job in the jewelry industry. Finding even retail sales jobs in the jewelry market will give you the chance to really put your training to good use and you will be able to gain a lot of valuable experience that way. You want to make sure that you are making it a point to learn as much as you can, even once you have the retail job. There are always new things to learn.

As you are working on finding employment and even once you have a position somewhere, you want to make sure that you are working on expanding your list of contacts within the industry. The more contacts you have, the better chance you will have at being able to work on your own, independently. You can work for retailers, auctions houses, museums and even banks. The more contacts you have, the more money you will be able to make.

Another thing to remember is that you have to make sure that you are keeping up with your various certifications. You will also want to make sure that you are making an effort to continue with your education. If you can gain more certifications through places like the Gemological Institute of America, or the GIA, you will be able to stay ahead of the game as the technology advances.

Becoming a jewelry appraiser is not incredibly hard but there is a lot of stuff that you need to learn. Making mistakes could very well cost your company and yourself a lot of money so make sure that you are learning everything that there is to learn for this field. If you do this, you will have a very rewarding career.
