Department Store Jobs
A department store manager is responsible for supervising employees, for making sure that the store offers products and services that satisfy the needs and desires of customers, and for running the store at a profit. A department store manager directs and coordinates the activities of the department store, selling various lines of merchandise in specialized departments. A department store manager also coordinates the activities of non-merchandising departments, such as purchasing, accounting, and advertising, to obtain optimum efficiency of operations with minimum costs in order to maximize profits. A department store manager negotiates or approves contracts negotiated with suppliers of merchandise or with other establishments. A department store manager reviews operating and financial statements and departmental sales records to determine merchandising activities including additional sales promotions, clearance sales, or other sales procedures in order to achieve profitability in store operations and the merchandising objectives.
A department store manager job typically requires two to four years of retail management experience. A department store manager should have exceptionally strong merchandising skills with a focus on cross-merchandising. A department store manager should possess strong interpersonal skills and good communication skills, both verbal and written.
